Option for Render to NOT place on timeline by default

Postby tas » Wed Dec 14, 2011 17:47

Many people are using render for various reasons and most stress out to undo after it so the rendered file gets of the timeline. I just messed up a project, because I forgot to undo in time and have now actually lost a lot of editing work because of that. Perhaps I was careless, but it can happen to anyone (the carelesness I mean)
So I say drop the placement, or put a confirmation dialogue, or option beforehand.

PS. This made me notice that if on for a long period all backups of the projects will be overwritten, so there is no actual copy available from before you opened the project in the day. Ok you could specify a lot of files with a medium frequency, but a "yesterdays" copy or something could be useful

Hi, this will be useful...specialy when finish a radio commercial, everytime I render the final mix to mp3, if i forgot undo I missed the original pmf file of this final mix. And if after I backup the project, I have the mp3 file in timeline and in the Media Folder.

Or you could just save under a different name, like most of us do (Versioning). Before doing somethings sensitive to a timeline, I either save under a different name, or take all of my material and place it 10 hours further in the timeline and experiment there.

P.S. I hardly ever render, but if I do, I always first duplicate the source. In PT yes, you render all the time.

Do the render, hit 'undo'...that's all I've ever needed.

True, but it's too easy to hit "save" first, and then... oops.

+1 for the option not to have it in the timeline if so desired.

(mind, MixDown... Split Selection By Groups would be kinda handy too...)

I do same.

Yes! It's a good habit for safety. So, I save under a different name before rendering instead of after rendering.

I user render all the time and want the rendered segments in the timeline as they usually involve processing (eg: renovator). I don't care if this is an option or not, but I'd rather not have to hit another dialog confirm everytime I render and/or have to spot my renders into place. When I don't want something I use undo as others have mentioned.

FWIW: I use document libraries for versioning - putting the composition in it for a given edit, and also sections that I render so I can always revert back easily. I know you can still make mistakes, but 32+ levels of undo should cover most mistakes.

Also - since when does hitting save delete the undo history?

Mark

The render dialogue needs further improvement.

a. there's a small bug regarding the selection of source (whole, between marks, etc.) it does not always do as told

b. More flexible (and correct) naming options, so it produces sensible file naming. for example 'suffix with strip name" appends T001 rather that the strip name. its just messy and I need to be able to render individual tracks quickly and coherently

I'd like to call this function option, "Process In Place"
Which would mean the audio is processed and automatically inserted in place of the audio on the timeline.
In other 2 track editing systems I use there are various ways to work on the timeline
Being able to process in place on the timeline - say compress, declick, denoise, eq, filter etc is a normal way of working and save a lot of time.
If Im not happy with the processed result it's a simple matter of undo, reprocess. which could be the same on the PMX timeline
If all else fails I can go back to the original audio and start again.

Mark
