NordVPN for mac install causes Ravenna sync issues on both Mac and Windows bootcamp

Postby jkurtz11 » Sat Jul 29, 2023 16:46

Hi all,

I just wanted to share a troubleshooting experience I recently had with Ravenna on my 2019 Intel i9 Macbook Pro which cropped up on both my MacOS VAD and Windows MAD installations. Hopefully this post will be useful to others if they run into the same problem.

I had been using the Coreaudio VAD with Ventura successfully even before there was a version released supporting Ventura. MAD was also working fine with my Windows 10 bootcamp installation.

Then, after doing the Ventura update to 13.4.1, I started to experience errors when trying to make connections in Aneman. The message on the mac VAD control panel was something like “No PTP master or unmatched domain”. Interestingly I also had problems with Windows MAD. I immediately assumed it was hardware. My computer thunderbolt ports, ethernet adapter, the switch, or cabling. I started to zero-in on the switch, because when I connected my Anubis directly to my computer, bypassing the switch, everything returned to normal operation. I had a Dell 2808. I went ahead and ordered a Cisco CBS 350, but ended up with the same result. I thought it had to be my computer. So I tried another computer with thunderbolt 3 ports, and amazingly had the same problem. As it turns out I had NordVPN installed on both computers, but only on the Mac side, and of course I did not have the VPN active when trying to use Ravenna. But, on what I thought was a long shot I uninstalled NordVPN, and amazingly everything worked normally. This was astounding to me as the mere installation of NordVPN on the mac side caused MAD problems on the Windows bootcamp side. That was something I didn’t even think was possible. There must be some low-level bios adjustment done with NordVPN that when installed, affects both the MacOS and Windows installations. And, it seems that even without the VPN active, the mere fact that it is installed is enough to cause a problem. So, bottom line is, don’t install NordVPN (or probably any VPN software) on your Ravenna audio machine. Hope this saves someone else the week of troubleshooting I spent working this out.
