Changing Timeline (Tab position) layout

Hi All,

I am wondering if I am missing something in attempting to control the position of TABs (below on a single screen system; to the right for dual screens) in the screen layout.

I note that the Settings 'Timeline Layout' page allows selection of either 'position at project creation', but I have a need to change the Tab position after recording has been done, as I move sessions from my mobile (single screen) rig, to my studio (dual screen) system.

Can anyone help?

Cheers, Ross

Hi Ross,

I am bushed by this as well. Seems dysfunctional to me. Here is some previous discussion on the matter.

Hi David.

Thanks for the link to previous discussion....whew! Aren't forums great for Chinese whispers! Seems half the battle is getting the picture accurately conveyed from your head to someone else's without losses - audio is easier, I think :)

Anyway, as usual, it shows how many different approaches different people have.

What I was trying to achieve, was to switch the arrangement of Tabs relative to Timeline (from the default 'Tabs below', to 'Tabs on RHS') as the PMX Settings page allows (all within an extended PMX window stretched across the 2 screens, and with the divide between Timeline on LHS, and Tabs on RHS, set to where the screens divide). It hasn't been a problem to date, as with a 2 screen system, I simply started each session with that arrangement. It only became a problem when I started using a 2nd field capture system with a single screen. Then I had a need to change the orientation as I transferred the session from the field to the studio system for mixing.

I know that changing this Setting works before a session is created, but have had to jump through all sorts of hoops to trick PMX into doing this to an existing session - not always with success.

However, if there is no simple way of doing this to an existing session, it seems the floating Tabs arrangement mentioned in the discussion (whereby Tabs float outside the Timeline window sized to one screen - much like the mixer and monitor windows do) may be a work-around. It isn't as elegant (to me) as getting the Tabs out of the way of the Timeline altogether, though.

Not to worry, I will work out a method.

Why dont you use Workspaces and incorporate the position of the tabs into these?

Hi Ross,

I've had this problem as well interchanging projects with someone who likes the tabs on the main screen. What you need to do is open an empty project with the tabs on the right screen and save this as the default tabs layout (View/Editor Tabs/Save Default Tabs Layout) (or you can save a tab preset). Now when you open a project with the 'wrong' tab layout, just load the default tabs layout in the same menu and you'll have the tabs where you want them.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks Tom,

This sounds just what I need. I knew there was bound to be a simple way.

Many thanks, Ross

...thanks also for the suggestion about Workspaces...one of the many aspects of Pyramix I have yet to fully explore :)

I have all my different tab layouts encapsulated into 9 different workspaces, and I bind these to keyboard shortcuts. You can choose to incorporate these tabs into your workspaces using the Workspace.....tab!

Still doesn't change the fact that you simply can't just locate the tabbed windows on a second screen and have them stay there.

You can with workspaces!

But the tabbed windows are always on the 2nd screen if you have tabs set to the right of the main window (unless you open them with a double-click). I must read the manual on using Workspaces though...didn't get the hang of them on the first go...!
