AAF from Final Cut Pro

Postby tas » Mon Jun 13, 2011 19:55

I got to work on a picture project edited in FCP. In pyramix I only have the AAF option. I was wondering if someone has similar experiences and could offer advice on the best way to go about it. I see that there are some plugins that offer AAF export. Has anyone successfully imported those in PMX?

thanks

Yes I have. Many. There is a plugin for FCP to export AAF's. I prefer embedded AAF's, though non-embedded work too, even with large projects. I did however experience FCP-AAF-export trouble (not PMX..FCP!). 50 frames audible handles on each and every cilp, and rubberbandings in FCP can to be undone with Reset Envelope Selection.
If you work with non-embedded AAF's you can even just link the composition to the existing media, without any import, convert or consolidate! So happy with my PMX, fixes everything!

Try the FCP import module for PMX.
I do not believe it can export FCP xml, but as I recall it can import.

True. I tried FCP XML too, but for some reason it is in FCP impossible to unlink the audio from the QuickTime Movies, so the transfer becomes one huuge disc with all consolidated FCP audio and FCP video (> 160 Gb, Dutch top format shows of 1 hour). It works, but takes a very long time and resides heavy on the processing power of PMX. i.e. makes PMX unresponsive for a long period of time. But... you end up with the complete FCP timeline, with (dummy) video tracks. I believe it is also possible to flow a FCP XML in VCube, but I never tried.

Unless someone here knows how to consolidate in FCP whilst unlinking XDCamHD 8 tracks audio from video, I'd say go for AAF.

thank you both for the tips. Unfortunately I can't get an AAF on the other end and I can't afford either the Omf or Xml options at the moment.
So I am trying with the EDL. Is anyone working with those as exported from FCP?

At the moment I am trying a small test project. It can't find any of the audio or video media as expected. I do have the audio files mounted, but PMX reads the metadata tag rather than the file name which is on the EDL. I am trying to connect the two but can't find a way to.

Is anyone working like that? Any clues on how I can link that EDL with my audio?

thanks

Soundtrack Pro is part of Final Cut Studio and speaks both OMF and AAF. So it could be possible to take the project into Soundtrack Pro and export an AAF from there. Knowing Apple and Soundtrack Pro I wouldn't be surprised if it fails, but maybe it's worth a try.
Best,
Tomas

I know that there is a FCP plugin called Automatic Duck that allows that FCP to deliver OMF's, and AAf's. I think that is a good workflow.

Just an update for general info. This was only for a short student film so no one could afford to buy any extra software. At the end I found a machine with logic installed and had the OMF convert there with success.
By the way, I read somewhere that FCP in the future will also drop the OMF export. Not sure if true
