MS-Strip

Dear community,

a question about MS-Strips:

there's a Mid and Side processing going in which saves having to do work arounds and creating extra tracks and/or busses. Now, how does one change the balance between Mid and Side channels? Just read a Pmx 10 install notes saying they are going to implement it in a later version...well, it's been a few versions since then. Is there a way of easily and conveniently changing the Mid and Side balance in the MS-Strip WITHOUT having to recourse to Clip gain?

Thanks!

J

Have you tried using the VS3 "MS Encoder" plugin? After all, it's the same process to convert MS to Stereo as it is to convert the other way.

If you know in advance that you're going to be using MS material in a Project, you could choose to set up the Mixer using the "Legacy" Mixing Bus architecture, which in turn will allow you to use the older MS Strip with its Center and Side Level controllers. However, you won't easily be making any Dolby Atmos mixes that way.

Worst case, you could just sigh heavily and use the Clip Gain method, grumbling the whole time about "Progress? Hah!!! Why I otta..."

Thanks for your response Frank!

Clip gain wasn't going to work for this situation as there may still be some edits to be made. The satisfying solution that worked for me this weekend is as you suggested using the the MS Encoder in a separate bus, so I'm able to level before the bus.

On a separate bus? Were you not able to install it on the two-channel Strip? Seems like an extra step...

Yes I was, but that was the case I couldn't easily change the balance of the channels separately without extra steps...or am I missing sth?

I guess I'm having difficulty picturing your mixer. If you have multiple signals that all require the same amount of MS decoding, then by all means run them through an Aux. Bus. I was picturing that you had, perhaps, a single MS microphone 2-channel signal, in which case installing the plug-in on that Strip would get you where you're going. It's been so long since I used an MS pair that I've had to embark on a mining expedition into my memory.
