Win10 users - don't click on "Check for Updates"

Postby fl » Wed Oct 03, 2018 15:34

Apparently, if you simply check for updates on any version of Win10 prior to 1809, Microsoft will update your system automatically to its newest version. Since 1809 is not supported by Merging for the latest version of Pyramix, users should be cautious.

All I can say is that we are running 13 systems here and I will not upgrade any of them to windows 10. Windows 7 is rock solid and does not have all the extra bloat and automatic updates. On the systems I did test W10 on, I saw a noticeable increase in system instability and the administrator and permissions issue is a non-starter. On the 2 laptops that we have to run w10 on, I've disabled windows updates and do the updates manually with WSUSoffline.
As always, YMMV.
All the best,

I run W10 Ent LTSB here. Long Term Service Branch. It only receives security updates, nothing else changes. Extremely stable. Worth pursuing for a DAW. A new version of it us due to be released early next year. So that's a three year update cycle instead of one month.

Don't have this problem.
Using W10 Pro, 1803 with all recommended tweaks.
Using Semi-Annual Channel Updates (Not Semi-Annual Channel Tageted!), works rock-solid at the moment with 11.1.5
I'm not forced by Windows to update to 1809.

I use Win 10 and turned off windows update, when an approved updatet suddenly killed my Ravenna konfig.
Will try that WSUSoffline, as it seem to be a good tool.

One of the most useful things about WSUSoffline update is that you can create a custom blacklist for updates.
All you need to do is copy and paste the merging blacklisted KB numbers from the confluence page into this text file:

\wsusoffline\client\ExcludeList.txt
Also, please remember to do security only updates, not rollups.

All the best,
