Protool and disc config

Postby ritz » Fri Jun 06, 2003 00:28

I'm about to make sound design for a movie.
I will work on Protools, on macintosh and I'm searching for someone who could tell me how I should config my session perfectly to be imported in Pyramix.
My config: Mac OS9.2, Protools 5.1 TDM (or 5.1.3).
Must I activate "enforce mac and PC compatibility"?
Should I use AIFF, WAV or SDII, and will Pyramix convert the files?
I will save on a HFS+ formattes firewire disc. Is it ok with that format?

I positively curious about testing Pyramix and I'm waiting for your answers
:)

Hi Ritz,

I just finished a live production which was recorded and edited as follows:

Live-Recording on Tascam
48 tracks 24bit 48kHz with two Mx2424, each equipped with Ultra 320 146GB SCSI drives, format HFS+, files SDII.

Studio-Overdubs on Protools HD
Onto the same drives we added 16 more tracks with some chorus, vocals and guitars in a separate studio with Protools HD.

Editing and mixing on Pyramix
For editing, we used Macdrive to mount the two HFS+ SCSI drives into Pyramix. No problem playing or editing. But for safety and overview reasons, I rendered and converted the SD2-audio into multitrack PMF-files onto two 180GB fast IDE-drives. This helped me a lot to reduce the number of files and I did all the editing (64track Source-Destination editing with 4.1beta13) on these two IDE-drives. In order to avoid pushing the IDE-drives too hard, I played back tracks 1-32 on ide1 and 33-64 on ide2. :P

Concerning Firewire, I only use firewire IDE drives for backup as I have experienced frequent playback stalls with firewire. Maybe it's a configuration problem on my computer. :?
Hope this helps,
Jakob
