Hi there, not really my forum here, but I need some advice... Just tried to open some mpeg2 video files on DS video player but DS refuse to open them. Then I noticed that WMP was not opening them as well, due to lack of suitable codec. I installed Stinky´s mpeg 2 free codec and now WMP can play the files and DS can open it too, but using the jog wheel on Isis does not allow for smooth frame by frame wheeling. Can anybody advise me on this? Anytime I try to use MPEG2 files on DS I get some sort of problems, MPEG 1 seems to be the best alternative but some clients don´t ask first. Thanks and regards,
Paulo

Hi Paulo,
The MPEG2 codec usally uses Group Of Pictures to achieve high compression ratio. Then only one picture is totally encoded (called Key frame or Iframe) every 12 pictures. Other pictures are only encoded as differences between key frames. That means that displaying a particular picture if not a key frame, requires to decode 12 pictures. This makes the frame wheeling far from smooth.
The MPEG2 codec may also encode without GOP. Then a key frame is produced for every picture. This is what you need for post production.

Hi Laurent, thanks for your explanation, I was not aware of the GOP issue. I was surprised because the MPEG2 files in question were generated within Vcube at another studio were I had a demo. So what you´re saying is to generate MPEG2 files without the GOP then. I´ll talk to them about that issue then. Apart from this issue, do you think is advisable to install any other type of codec package in XP, to allow DS video player to read some files that sometimes it refuses to open or is the present version updated in terms of codecs? I´m running VT 1.3.9 and Pyramix V6 Masscore beta. Thanks very much for your help.

Hi, thanks for the tips. I´m running WMP 11 as you said, but on attempting to read the files generated in Vcube I had to install an mpeg2 codec(stinky´s) and then was ok. Also, on DS I couldn´t open it either and after the codec install it was fine, apart from the wheeling problem. Anyway, I´m not too familiar with video codecs, I don´t want to start installing things that may interfere with DS video player performance, hence my question about the codec package..Regards,
Paulo

Hi,
If you are in trouble with a particular video file, don't hesitate to drop me a link to download it. I will advise you on the possible solution to play it in DS player.
Here is general rule: A file playing in WMP must also play in DS player. But all codec aren't usable for post prioduction because of GOP.
regards,
Laurent

OK Laurent, thanks very much for your time. Did really like Vcube. Until now I´ve been working with DS and has been fine, but Vcube really opens a lot of other interesting possibilities, let alone freeing the PC just for audio. Apart from the possibility of having more encoding options, one of the features I´ll really like to have is the video delay compensation as I´m really fed up with the delay introduced by TV LCD displays, you know, the audio always comes first, it´s really upseting for the clients, they ´re always asking if the things are in sync. I end up using a delay plugin just for monitoring purposes, as this only happens in play mode, the problem is I have to remember switching it off before I mixdown... considering having an external hardware delay just for the monitoring eh eh... Regards,
Paulo
