Feedback on Toshiba laptops?

Postby mflemi » Sun Nov 28, 2004 18:48

Greetings, friends,

I've been a full Pyramix core user (primarily classical editing and post) for 3+ years and love it. I'm planning to acquire a Pyramix Native system for personal use, with an eye to upgrade to a portable Mykerinos rig as gigs merit.

I'm simply writing to ask for feedback on Toshiba laptops. The Satellite P30 has the features and price point that fit my needs. Any reason to worry about its compatibility with Pyramix?

Thanks in advance!

Hello MF,

I bought the A75 Satellite. A couple things I can warn you about:
Check the ram in the display card. Mine came with only 64 meg you'll want more.
The P4 model is a little noisy with the fans. But, other than having to reinstall the PMX software, it has been functioning decently well.
Good luck!

Hi Don, and Michael

Don, I'm curious as to why you feel 64MB of graphics card RAM is not enough? I have a Toshiba 5205-S705 which has an nvidia graphics card with 64mb - the display on this laptop is stunning, and I have never had any issues which I felt more graphics ram would solve. And I do work with picture a lot of the time as well.

Regards,

Mark

Hi MF,

I am using the Toshiba Tecra 8200, which continues to give good service with Pyramix. If you check out an earlier entry on this forum from me, you will see more detail regarding it's set up.

Donald mentions fan noise on his computer.
The way my studio is configured, this is not an issue. In fact, I use a small utility for Toshiba which alows keeping the fan turned on, and therefore running the processor at a lower temperature. This can be useful e.g when rendering.

It is available from... http://www.buzzard.org.uk/toshiba/windows.html

All the best,
aomahana.

Mark,

The video in particular laptop is not good at all. Most of my work is editting classical music. Were resolution of the soundwave and cursor are very important. Especially when I need to replace a 16th or 32nd note!
When the zoom goes into a second per inch on my screen, the cursor looks more like a blur than a line. This performance (or lack of) is consistant on every program. Also the brightness cannot be adjusted when I'm sitting in a dark concert hall. I sometimes feel that the full brightness might disturb the audience. I guess a gel would fix that.

aomahana,
Thanks for the link, this looks like a neat program. I was referring to fan in noise in my own situation. I do have it in a closet when in the studio. But when I'm in a concert hall, the fans like to come on during the pianissimo sections!

I might not have done enough research when I purchased this, but it seems to be pretty stable since a software reinstallation.

Best Regards,
Don
