Hi,
Normally my projects are associated with a picture edit which has the golden rule of "Lock Horizontal Drag" to avoid moving the audio with respect to the pictures.
This week I am editing a project destined for a CD. So no pictures to worry about. This is new territory for me.
I am editing a multitrack for someone else far away to remix. As we were reviewing an edited passage, my Producer asked if I could tighten a particular edit 3 minutes into a half hour piece. I realised that if I was to just drag the clip, it would upset the next edit down the timeline. What I did was to place the cursor to the right of the offending edit, then use the menu option to select from cursor to the end or the project and group the selection. I could then drag everything to the right of the edit. The problem is, this made everything so slow, I assume this was because every clip on every track was now being modified in the EDL.
Over lunch I had a bit of an experiment using auto ripple, but it didn't appear to do what I expected. I noticed it destroyed the crossfade on the next edit. so I abandoned that.
So have I missed something? Is there a quick and easy way to slip audio without mucking up all the other edits down the timeline?
Thanks,
Julian

Hi Julian,
I use 'Auto-Ripple' all the time and haven't seen a subsequent edit or fade get messed up. They do *look* pretty f'ed up when you're dragging the audio, though.
To make it work properly for what you need to do, have "Auto-Crossfade by Default" turned on in the General Settings/Application/Drag & Drop section. I can't imagine a more poorly-named feature that's so important to the basic operation of Pyramix...
This setting totally affects how Auto-Ripple behaves. It's intended to invert the default behaviour of moving audio in the EDL. e.g. - 'checked', it acts as if you were holding the CTRL-key down while manipulating the audio.
Being the lazy sort that I am, I just leave "Auto Crossfade by Default" checked in the aforementioned location and get on with my work. I will say that the 'Snap' functions about to behave poorly with this setting, though.
Best,
Graemme

The easiest way is to do it in the fade editor as it ripples everything upstream of the edit, that is assuming that the edit he is asking you to tighten is a crossfade. If it is a gap between tracks I would just select all to right of cursor and drag left, even with hours of audio this shouldn't present a problem.

Hi,
Pyramix behaves strange and very often not as expected when it comes to dragging a clip and ripling the clips to the right or left in the timeline.
When dragging and dropping a clip in Auto-Ripple, Pyramix behaves like you have cut the clip out of the EDL when you start dragging. That's why all the clips to the right jump to the left to fill the gap of the clip you drag.
When you drop the clip, Pyramix behaves as if you pasted the clip in the EDL at the position of left edge of the clip you drop. All clips to the right of this edge will be pushed to the right to make room for the clip you drop.
If you have markers positioned at the clip you drag, they will disappear!
If you press CTRL + drag the clip, all clips and markers to the right will slip (right or left) with the clip you drag.
If you keep CTRL pressed while dragging a clip over the end of a clip to the left, Pyramix will make a crossfade between the clips.
If you let go of CTRL while dragging a clip over the end of a clip to the left, Pyramix will layer the two clips at the overlap (the end of the clip and the start of the next clip will play simultaneous).
"All Settings > Editing > Drag&Drop > Auto-crossfade by default" unfortunately does not do exactly as expected.
When checked, all clips and markers to the right will slip (right or left) with the clip you drag, but NO Auto-Crossfade is made when dragging over the end of a clip to the left. Instead Pyramix layers the clips. So the function is actually "Auto-Layering by default".
To make a crossfade you have to press CRTL after you start dragging the clip. Confusing? Yes!!
Another way to slip clips to the left is to select the clip you want to slip and choose "Clip > Nudge > Nudge to previous Edit" (SHIFT+ALT+Left Arrow).
In Auto-Ripple Mode, the selected clip (and all following clips and markers) will slip left to the nearest clip edge (or marker or cursor).
This is a great way to set the space between CD tracks by ear. Play over the end of a song, stop playback where you want the next song to start, select the next clip, hit SHIFT+ALT+Left Arrow and you're done.
I usually work with "All Settings > Editing > Drag&Drop > Drag&Drop bypasses Auto-Ripple" checked. This temporarily turns off Auto-Ripple when you drag&drop a clip.
You can still use the CTRL modifier make the following clips and markers move with the clip you drag and make a crossfade when overlapping clips.
Best regards,
Øystein Halvorsen
