Touchscreen window/browser control for PMX

A good portion for this technology seems already available in Ovation.
It would be really nice to control fader, send levels, solo, mute, monitor control, transport and some much used buttons from a touchscreen.
I tried using one with the normal mixer and it was not a pleasurable experience. I'm now looking for a Wacom cintiq and tipro 128 pos keyboard as i think this will be a very fast mixing and editing combination and sufficiently precise for fader and plugin control. (tipro didicated PMX keycaps wink wink :-)

But a dedicated touchscreen especially with remote/wifi capability would be very nice. Controlling monitor mixes at the recording stage having nice touch faders, metering and start/stop recording with big buttons would be a good addition.
You could even think about "personal" mixers on screen for musicians on smartphones or tablets.

Maybe some would like some basic hardware faders to go with this. This could make a hardware mixer obsolete for most mortals. A good source of inspiration could be the Digico S21 system of tiles to arrange channels and busses.

If you have an iPad you should take a look at the free "Pro Tools Control" app from Avid. It works with eucon (over ip network - incl. wifi) and works quite well with pyramix for most of the functions you mention. (you do need an oasis economy key from merging in order to use eucontrol - although I think that may be included in most packs now).

Hey that sounds like fun, i have no ipad but i'm going to loan one to check out!!

edit: i run two artist mix fader boxes so it probably works out of the box. And if it's nice i may not buy the cintiq but just the tipro edit keyboard.

I also run two artist mixes - it's a good combination for me. Couple of things:

You may need to update eucontrol in order to see the iPad app (if you are not already running the current 3.4.x).
The mixes will not bank with the app - however the app makes switching between layouts easy.

good luck,

Mark

Do you also use the pro-tools ipad dock?

I do, but I also use pro-tools. the dock works alright with pyramix, but I probably wouldn't have bought it for pyramix only. it's not as well integrated as with pt and the current eucon software doesn't allow reprogramming of all dock controls - such as the shuttle wheel. The things I use it for primarily with pmx are switching monitor source/speaker set etc... which you can do easily with an artist transport.

I guess a k&m ipad holder is the best for me then. I used a euphonix artist transport for a while, programmed it in different ways but never liked to use it. I'm not a wheel person i guess. For monitor control i have a hardware solution from Crookwood. The only reason i would buy a dock would be heavenly EQ and dynamics control. The way an artist mix maps it does not help me very much. I'm making making a nice template for my programmed keyboard i just bought. It has 128 positions so i think i can put all the transport and edit knobs from the dock on that.

If the ipad does what it seems i'm a happy camper only a well integrated channel strip controller could help me speed some things up a notch.

Thanks for the tips!!

Cheers

Hey thanks phaseboy! i was not aware of this app. i just connected it to PMX and it is reminiscent of when i had an Artist controller a few years ago. Since my TANGO is disabled for the moment this may come in handy. Especially for adjusting plugins without having to touch the mouse.
It does not seem to show the plugins that are on mix groups or the stereo buss, however.

Maybe I spoke too soon. i just went back to the app and when I touch the "Channel" section I have PAN control, which is great, but i can't figure out how to return to the plugin controls. hmmmm Operator error, I'm sure. any thought?

But wait, there's more. Now I DO have plugins on the busses...but not sure how I got there
?

After working with it this afternoon - I've decided the plugin thing is just buggy. Afterall PMX is "not qualified" by AVID.

Anyone know how to build an iPad APP for Pyramix? that would be the best.

Hi Rick,

You've touched upon the main annoyance with the app and pyramix. It isn't inconsistent though it just doesn't show you the strip you see in pro-tools (where the black banner is in pyramix you see buttons for sends/eq/dyanmics/pan/etc... in pro tools. The "buttons" still work in pyramix you just can't see them. If you take a look at one of the promo shots that shows the app you'll see the buttons I mean and their location.

Also in pyramix you can't add things from the channel window - so for examples you'll only see sends show up if you have aux sends on your mixer already. You'll only see plugins if you have plugins on the currently selected channel etc..

It would definitely be better to have something tailor made for pmx, but in the absense of that the avid app does a pretty good job.

Best Regards,

Mark

In our second studio, we have installed a dedicated 21" touch screen mounted on a adjustable monitor stand. And allthough selecting clips is somewhat workable, the majority of actions cannot be performed at all because the PMX-GUI is not prepared for this, with all it innyminny tiny buttons/controls and all it's different methods for all operations. It works wonderfully well with both Protools and Nuendo. Over the past few years they have made huge steps forward into the emminent future of touch control. Merging completely missed this boat. I hammered on this for years, but I died shouting in the desert. And so did my hands after years of pyramixes clicketyclicketyclick...

Yes everything is small even for mouse/wacom. Luckily a lot of things are good to control with eucon or key commands but the touch experiënce is still awfull.

we'll see maybe in some time. But i'm not going to buy an s6 or even an s3 in the near future.

Mark,

I did discover the blank icons this morning. If i touch the far left i can pull up plugins - the middle brings up sends and the far right opens panning.

iI also like that I can arm tracks without mousing around the screen and clicking.

That is disappointing to hear that the PMX GUI is not touchscreen friendly. Especially after seeing how it does work with PT. After 24 years of trackballs and meeses (as Snagglepuss used to say, "you meeses are driving me to pieces") my carpal tunnel is a true pain in the...patookas

Oh No! I feel like I'm heading that way. When I play piano my thumbs hurt. When if comes to guitar, I'm pickin' but not grinnin anymore. Did you have the surgery?
