Merging Technologies

I have always worked with monitors and never used headphones.
But I am doing more work from home now and there are times when everyone is asleep and I have things I still want to work on.
Any ideas on headphones people like that would have a fairly flat response?

HD650 is pretty common, so are the HD600

I've been very impressed with the B&W P5 headphones.

Pay as much attention to the headphone amp as the phones. Many low impedance phones will give you a very thin response when driven from utility outputs of various pieces of gear.

Invest in a decent headphone amp. One of my favorites was made by Creek. It was a class A design, but you had to modify it to work with high sensitivity phones like the Sony 7506, otherwise it was too noisy and the level control was barely off the peg.

Focal Professional headphones just landed and am liking them!

AKG K 702 and Lake People G 109. Hours of fatigue-free listening. Neutral, which is good, but can be difficult to judge low frequency levels.

Concur. Certainly in the classical sphere, HD600's I would consider a 'standard', with a smattering of HD650. Of course there are the HD800 if you are feeling flush, but a spare cable for those (if you take them on session and artist have a tendency to trip over the cable...) is the same price as a whole set of HD600...

One day I did a test, which to buy, between a Sennheiser 800 and a Stax electrostatic SRS 2170 combination.
Both sounded very, very different (the price is not) ..clearly the Sennheiser was much more hyped in the highs and espcially the bass from the Stax
translated very neutral and realistic (testing on different styles of music).
So the Stax it was and got and Stax headphone amplifier also...many years of satisfaction till now.

Yes, STAX here too and the valve amp (exciter). Nothing I have ever heard comes close for neutrality and fatigue free listening.

Using the Cavalli Liquid Gold amp with either the Abyss 1266 or the Audeze LCD-XC. Sounded better than my Blue Hawaii and Stax 009

How do you like the Abyss? I would love to hear your opinion, the Abyss is a headphone I have no way to audition here in Spain. I'm currrently using an HE-6 with a power amp and love it, I listened to it side by side with the LCD4 and the Utopia and found that the HE-6 was better reproducing faithfully the instruments' timbre than them, but I have the feeling that the Abyss is a beast:)
