Oh by the way, Pyramix Version 11.1.4 was released

Postby charlienyc » Tue Aug 14, 2018 23:54

Pyramix Version 11.1.4 was released a week ago.
It was frustrating to see that on Gearslutz before reading it here.

I'm sure the slowness is due to it being summer, people being on vacation leaving Merging short-staffed, and Merging being a small company.

I've been in contact with Nicolas Cavin in the last 24 hours, and he assures me that license upgrades, and bug reports will be handled as quickly as possible, and that the formal release notice of the new Pyramix version will appear soon. Reading between the lines, I think he may be the only person holding down the fort for the time being...

So far, 11.1.4 feels pretty solid, and it appears that the CPU load indicator is not going mental as it often did in 11.0.x.

The new stand-alone Publishing utility seems to offer little in the way of additional features, apart from easily associating a cover image to a pre-existing MTFF file for subsequent export. I did have a little trouble with it on my first launch - not all the available output file formats were offered (mp3 and AAC being notably absent), and the first publishing job I tried (outputting a set of FLACs from a pre-existing MTFF) seemed to complete, but then my computer froze and I had to do a hard shutdown and re-boot. Once my system was back up and running the program ran without issues, offering all the output options, and doing a Publishing job to completion without any problem. In addition to your files, you get a nice little report detailing the output progression, as well as a peak level reading for each file.

In the meantime, Disk-Write still retains the ability to run a Publishing job just as before, so it appears the only benefit of the new program is a more streamlined user interface, and the ability to add the cover image (except, as mentioned, for FLACs).

Having the use of VST3 plugins is a terrific and long overdue addition, although I've noticed that the promised freedom to resize plug-in windows is not really there, even for plugins whose VST2 instance allows this. Other than that, VST3s seem to run just as well as their VST2 counterparts, and you can freely mix 2s and 3s in any order in Mixer Strips and Busses. For a while I was running both VST2 and 3 versions of the same plugin, which caused no problems at all.

It's interesting to note that a new version release from Merging results in almost dead quiet in the forum - how many other DAWs out there can say the same?

I just installed and upon launch get an error saying : "this application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "windows" in **." Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.

I re ran the installer and chose REPAIR to no avail. I'm about to uninstall and reinstall and make sure I Run with ADMIN selected. I'llcheck back in.

Any one else seen this?

Reinstalling did not work. Starting to get worried.

I saw in the release notes that 11.1.4 was qualified with Win10 1803 I went ahead and upgraded Windows.

Fortunately I made a image of my C drive just in case.

Did you uninstall the previous version (with Windows' "Add or Remove Programs" page)? That's always a good idea with any Pyramix upgrade, even the one's labelled "Hotfix".

What were you saying it being dead quiet on the forum after a new version release?

I don't know about dead quiet, but I would have been dead in the water had it not been for a C drive image backup.

Frank, i did uninstall via "programs" in Control Panel.

When I updated Windows 10 via the "settings" page it was a newer build than is listed in Merging's compatible OS page
perhaps that is the fly in the ointment.

So I will try downloading KB 4343909 from MS and see what happens.

If i upgrade PMX before WIN10 - does that matter?

Have you disabled your virus protection and Defender before installing?

Julian, I guess I cursed it - sorry everyone.

Rick, take a look at this post on the Ask Woody website - https://www.askwoody.com/2018/yet-anoth ... in10-1803/

Frank,
I think you are missing the big picture WRT the album publishing. You can now make a single MTFF file (and QC a single MTFF file) for all the different deliverables for a given title with correct samplerate conversion/dithering. When I submit masters, I typically have to generate a set of masters that includes:
    PMI/DDP
    44.1k/16 WAV
    96k/24 WAV
    192k/24 HDWAV
    192k/24 MFiT WAV
    DSDEM/DSF 64fs
    DSDEM/DSF 256fs
The other thing is that there is the ability to add or subtract gain in the sample rate conversion, which makes the creation of MFiT compliant masters and DSDEM for SACD production super easy.
You can also script all the information that you need for creating filenames without having to manually edit.
All of this happens with a single button push. Oh, and it is multithread, so all of these processes happen at the same time and it is blazing fast compared with doing it within previously. That is the benefit.
Finally, one of the huge advantages of VST3 over VST2 is DSP usage and speed during mixdown. VST3 will automatically disable processing is there is no input to the plugin, so it only uses DSP then the plug is active. It also allows for the correct routing of multichannel inputs and outputs of the plugin.

As always, YMMV.
All the best,
-mark

Mark, I forgot to turn off said programs.
When I do turn them off, will the latest incarnation of 1803 work, or should I stick with the build listed on Merging site?
Thanks

Frank, After reading the AskWoody site, I'm searching ebay for an 8 track Scully machine and an Auditronics console! And a splicing block!

Thanks for your help, guys. 11.1.4 is running smoothly on win10 1709.
I guess the question now is how "at risk" am I staying with an out of date OS?
