Dither to MTFF

Postby DJS » Mon Aug 01, 2016 12:56

Dear All,

As I understand it an MTFF file is 24 bit only. This begs the question, when creating a 24 bit digital release source MTFF file from the mandatory 32 bit timeline, what dither is used and is this controllable in any way. I cannot see any explicit control of the dither setting used. Are the 32 bit files truncated to 24 bit perhaps?

I asked David Jacques that very question about a year ago, and was told that it was handled automatically. I assume that it's flat spectrum dither, because there is little reason to use shaped dither when going to 24 bit, especially from 32 bit float.

Right, thanks Frank. I cannot find this in the manual. and might mention it in our upcoming user group meeting.

There's little reason to use *any* dither when converting from 32-bit FP to 24-bit Integer.

32-bit float audio does not equal 32-bit integer audio. In Pyramix, there is no strict need to dither 32-bit FP to 24 bit integer.

A non-clipping 32-bit floating point file, when nulled against a 24 bit integer file (itself created from the same 32-bit FP file) will show no residual whatsoever because they are exactly the same data.

Of course! Many thanks for reminding me about the zero exponent Graemme. That clipping is the key, or the exponent, as it were.
