Izotope RX crashing with regularity in v10-Resolved

Postby StephenMarsh » Tue Jun 14, 2016 17:41

I'm a heavy RX Advanced user - my system was crashing 10-12 times a day - mostly when trying to render processed audio back into the edl. Combine that with the UBER-clunky back and forth dance to access RX in the first place and it has me running back to protools for both the stability and ease of use.

Questions:

Has anyone gotten this to work reliably....or even close to reliable?

Is there an easier way to get audio into and out of RX - the render thing is simply retarded (as in: lacking a normal rate of development for a given age) PT operated like this with 'rewire'......back in 1998! Is it on Izotope or Pyramix who gets the blame? I don't know....regardless, it just cripples this software for any serious restoration work IMO (which is a shame as it excells in so many other areas. Any shortcuts or tips GREATLY appreciated.

It's working fine here on my Native system, although I'll agree that the Render dance is clunky to the extent that I need to have the instructions open in Notepad whenever I do it. Most of the time, I'll export stereo pairs out of my Pyramix session, and do all the processing in standalone RX, or I'll use one of the RX VST plugins in my mixer if I need something less involved (such as de-clicking or de-clipping). Because de-noising requires a "learning" step, I usually prefer to do this in the standalone, as I've never really gotten the "use as reference" thing to work (and to be honest I really haven't tried much).

However, doing the Render round-about doesn't crash my system. The only issue I encountered was that RX retains the open file, even after the "Send Back" operation has been done, and as RX is the most recent audio application opened, it has control over my ASIO audio interface. This means that if I open a new project in Pyramix that is at a different sample rate, this won't change because RX is still controlling the interface, operating at the old rate. I don't see this being too huge an issue under normal working conditions, but today I wanted to test things at 44.1 to start with, and then to switched to a 96 kHz. project to see if the higher rate imposed greater strain on the process. Once I figured out that I needed close the processed file in RX, after successfully importing my work back into my Pyramix session (and even quitting RX to allow Pyramix control over my Interface's SR), everything continued to work properly.

When exactly does your system crash? What process(es) are you doing in RX? When exactly does it crash? What kind of crash (blue screen, transparent grey screen in Pyramix, or does Pyramix's transport just lock up)? Do you get as far as hitting the "Send Back" button in RX? Switching back to Pyramix and calling the Render operation again? Show? Process? If you get that far at least once, you may find you have to go to the Effects Rack, Show the RX Connect window and click on the Trashcan to empty out its buffer, before moving on to the next round of processing.

Three or four years ago, my old college mate was made Senior Product manager for RX. He, along with a couple of engineers, came to my studio and asked me why I didn't use RX. I gave him the following reply.

1) it does not do multi-channel material. We work in surround and need a product that does at least 8 channels at a time.
2) It does not work in the render function within Pyramix.

I then showed him the spectral repair of a 48 track/96k multitrack with ReNovator. Select the area, hit render and remove the noise, hit OK. The clip is replaced and I'm ready to move on.
Every time I see him he says that they are working on it and it's coming soon.... But to be honest, it is not a priority as their main user base are not Pyramix users. There were discussions between Izotope and PMX, but nothing has happened in a couple of years AFAIK.
All the best,

Thanks for the insights guys.

I'm finding it crashes when I attempt to render the audio back into the session - and to be clear - PMX crashes - not the whole system. I'm running Native with a Hapi FWIW.

I think Frank's workaround may be the real answer - pull the entire song to izotope - do my thing and then import it back in - the only question that raises is how? As far as I can tell - RX will only let me save a file as an RX doc - which PMX doesn't know from a hole in the ground.

I will also try the VST plug option - I (also) find the plugin implementation mighty clunky so I haven't explored that at all really - didn't know that was an option - thanks!

And Mark - I TOTALLY agree with the MCH failings in RX - running the same process 2 channels at a time (x3) for surround work is taxing.

I betcha anything it has something to do with a conflict between Pyramix and RX over which has control of the Hapi's playback.

Save the .rxdoc file if you would like to keep an "undo-able" version of your work. However, once that's done, go to the File menu and select "Export..." and a window will come up offering four audio file formats, one of which is WAV.

I'm usually doing all my RXing between the editing and mixdown stages of a project, so I prefer to Render 32 bit mono or stereo WAV files from individual Tracks in Pyramix. Then I'll save my Project and quit Pyramix, open RX and go to work. Once done, I'll "Export..." to the same same file names as those original Renders, quit RX, and before going back to my Pyramix session, delete the .pk2 files (the waveform display) that Pyramix generated along with the original Rendered files, so that I can force Pyramix to generate new ones that reflect any changes all my RXing may have introduced.

I will also try the VST plug option - I (also) find the plugin implementation mighty clunky so I haven't explored that at all really - didn't know that was an option - thanks!

Just like they did with Ozone Advanced, several of the individual RX modules are provided as plug-ins as part of a complete RX Advanced installation. To my mind, processing a whole track or even a complete mix with the kind of processes that Ozone plugins provide makes more sense than doing anything RXish this way, and since the one tool I tend to use most heavily is the Spectral Repair - not one of the plug-ins - it's just easier for me to go-there-and-back-again with the RX standalone. That said, I was impressed by how well the VST plug-in versions worked within a Pyramix project.

Not using the Hapi for playback from RX standalone - no idea how to get that to work - I use a separate DA for that (I'm admittedly ASIO-dumb)

Excellent - yes, I see that. Thanks!

Hi there...I'm running RX 5 adv. in PMX 10 (going nice !!)
I'm only doing stereo so I place RX monitor on the last channel in the mixer, RX Connect in FX Rack and render in Wave format to RX standalone and back ..super !
RX Ambience Match to get the same background or noise onto or behind another clip is my favourite at the moment.
Greetings,
Charly

For reasons too boring to print, I had to use RX within Pyramix for a couple of weeks last year...unbelievably annoying and RSI-inducing experience it was! I couldn't get back to Renovator fast enough...

I'm glad that RX works 'at all' but the RX-Connect thing is no substantial improvement over just manually rendering files to a folder, processing in RX and then putting them back in the EDL.

The price difference between RX and Renovator doesn't look so bad when factoring-in the time spent in GUI-Hell with the former.

Oh, and then there's the lack of multi-channel support as well...(as Mark already mentioned).

RX and RX Connect are causing no end of problems today. Can someone describe the Renovator workflow in Pyramix? Thinking of jumping ship.

1) Select area (I've done as many as 80 tracks at a time)
2) Press Control+W
3) choose renovator and hit enter
4) remove noise
5) hit ok and the clip is inserted and you're on to the next.
I can remove a simple noise in about 15 seconds.
All the best,

How does monitoring work when playing clips within the Renovator window? Is it through the mixer on the channels the clips are rendered from?

Yes, through the mixer.
the one thing you can't do while rendering is modify the mixer (Solo, etc...) while rendering. I haven't checked in a long time, but you used to be able to to do stuff though eucon with a controller while in render.

Thanks again Mark, I bit the bullet and ordered Renovator, looking forward to digging in. So many projects come in with ticks / pops / sniffs / click bleed / plosives / etc that it seems a worthy workflow improvement over RX. At least that's my justification :)

Stephen, sorry for hijacking your (timely) thread!

Just reporting back that Renovator is as advertised and the tight integration into the render window is wonderful. No doubt it's expensive but it will more than pay for itself in time saved vs RX.
